Choice of computer

I had intended to build a custom-made darkroom in the attic. We were already using a small Apple Macintosh computer. It occurred to me that it would be a lot less costly and a lot less fuss, to handle my images on a computer.
All my reading indicated that the Mac was right for graphics so I purchased a PowerMac 8600/200 in 1997. It is way out of date now (2002) and is still running it's original operating system ver7.5.5 but apart from being a little slower than I would wish for, pepped up with a little extra RAM and video RAM, it chugs along fine. It seems to do most things asked of it, so I seriously question the justification of expensive upgrades to the latest equipment unless the extra speed is essential. Even then I have come across new systems that, because of their excessive consumption of memory, end up not much faster overall. My main problem now (Feb 2002) is that the old system does not support most of the new software versions but then, I can’t afford most of them anyway!
